Ergocalciferol [40 M IU] powder - [Vitamin D2]
Ergocalciferol is produced by UV irradiation from Ergosterol followed by a series of chemical reactions. It occurs as white crystals or white, slightly yellowish crystalline powder. It is odourless, or has a faint, characteristic odour. Ergosterol is freely soluble in ethanol (95), in diethyl ether and in chloroform, sparingly soluble in isooctane, and practically insoluble in water. It is sensitive to air, heat and light. Ergosterol solutions in volatile solvents are unstable and are to be used immediately. A reversible isomerisation to preergocalciferol takes place in solution, depending on temperature and time. The activity is due to both compounds.
